McCook, Nebraska

I love this little short Aaron shot this on our road trip to Nebraska over Christmas break. It chronicles what going home to McCook, Neb., feels like through his eyes. We hadn't been to Aaron's hometown since last Christmas, and it was special not only to see our family, but for Aaron to spend an evening with all of his best friends from high school.

NU vs. UT

Ready for the understatement of the year? The University of Texas game tomorrow is a really big day for us. See this picture? It was taken approximately 20 minutes before :01 second was added (correctly) back to the game clock at the Big 12 Championship last year. That game that we lost 13-12. And now, as we head to the Big Ten conference, it's time to beat Texas.

Indeed, my exes actually went to Texas.
Tomorrow I will be wearing my scarlet for Red Out Around the World.
Here's to a good, clean win over the Longhorns. Tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 ET.

Coach Bo Pelini and I from my days as the student assistant to the University of Nebraska President's Office. I can't tell you how much fun I had working the president's tailgates throughout my college career. I miss it. I will miss the excitement in Memorial tomorrow, but, don't worry, the Nix household will be cheering on our Huskers from 1000+ miles away. Because there is no place like Nebraska.

go big red.

Recap

Last night Tia and I went to Omaha to do some shopping and enjoy dinner with Aaron's parents. The shopping was a bust, but dinner was excellent- the biggest steak I've ever eaten (or eaten at least part of). I took a picture with my hand next to it to send to Aaron- my hand was smaller than the steak. That's a lot of meat. (That's what she said?) Anyway, it was great to spend time with his parents. Afterward, we looked high and low to find a jacket I wanted, but it did not exist. Boo hoo.

Today the Huskers take on the OU Sooners. Last year, I went with Aaron and his entire family to Norman, Okla., to see the Huskers...and they got slaughtered. I'm hoping this year is much different. Obvs. When we were in Norman, I remember A.'s family drew Christmas names. Fast forward one year and I'm excited to be included in that :) I'm really thankful I'm getting another set of people with whom I can share my life. Mostly, though, I just think Aaron's the best God could have given me.

Today I miss Nebraska

I miss the way the cool blows in every night when the sun goes down. I miss the sounds of chewing and chirping bugs and the way those bugs sit atop corn as it waves back and forth. I miss the openness and the color of the prairie from Lincoln to McCook, passing under the Kearney Bridge and stopping to take a picture with the bison.

I miss driving out to Branched Oak Lake to watch sun set, or skipping to Hayward Park to try to swing the monkey bars. I miss watching fireworks from Haymarket Park field, and I miss barreling down Holdrege Street to avoid a tornado that snuck up on us while we watched a movie at The Ross.

I miss virgin daquiris at Hayward, the rainy summer, spending forever at work and getting home and turning on the air conditioning.

I miss Pepsi and Mountain Dew slushies and road trips across the country. I miss landlocked country and the people in all corners of it. I miss vacations with my family and my new family and driving to see "our church" on the side of the interstate.

I miss I-80 and 'O' Street and 16th and 17th and Village and Courtyards and Omaha and Holdrege.

Today, I miss Nebraska.
